The Callaway Big Bertha quickly became popular on its 1991 appearance. Named after an infamous, World War One German cannon it had a heavy driving head, and many golfers said it sent balls further.

The Callaway Big Bertha

The Callaway Big Bertha is getting some good reviews around the Internet and I'd like to add my own honest assessment here.

They're one of the most well know clubs on golf courses. And not just in the US. Around the world people are buying Callaway and world wide sales are said to be one billion dollars last year. That's a lot of happy golfers.

So that's my first point. The Big Bertha is a proven club. That doesn't mean that it's going to be right for you. I'm not saying rushout and buy one now. But for many of the people you are up against on the gold course, this is one of their secret weapons.

I should also say that they have been endorsed by people you would respect, including Arnold Palmer and Leta Lindley. OK, these people, and pros like them, have been winning tournaments and putting top prize money in their bank accounts for a long time. They can meet the hefty price of Callaway clubs. But just knowing they are Callaway will give you a confidence and poise you may be lacking out on the course.

But my main point is that the Big Bertha comes out of a lot of development.

The first 1991 Callaway Big Bertha came out of some very original thinking.

At a time, and you may well remember it, most drivers had small wooden heads. Not the Callaway blaster, it was made from nearly 200cc of gorgeous stainless steel. And that sort of thinking and development have followed. We've gone through more versions of the classic club and the company seems to be improving on it each time.

So you're handling science and engineering. And that will translate into a club that looks good, feels good, sends balls out much easier )because its got a beautiful amount of heft and weight behind it), and will set you apart from the guys you're playing with.

If you have the basics of your swing nailed down.

The Big Bertha seems to be more forgiving than many other clubs. There's some sort of self-correct seemingly built in to them. But this won't make up for a lack of basic skills.

So I'm not saying it is the miracle club. Rather, I'm saying that if you are a reasonable golfer, if you're serious and working on your game, then some of your shots with a Big Bertha are going to look miraculous to the people you play with.
